Survivors: plants adaptations to the environment

How vegetation changes according to differents environmental factors? We will compare adaptations that we can see on plants of tropical, mediteranean and desertic climate. We will see all adaptations that the rosemary present, as an example of plant that can survive in dry weather and a nenuphar's adaptations, as an example of aquatic plant.

Mediterranean plants

The botanical garden gives us the opportunity to study plant's adaptations to differents habitats in situ, more specifically the Mediterranean climate's  adaptations. We will see all the garden and inside the Mediterranean hill we will find out differents plants and explain their adaptations. In the laboratory, we will learn how we can use the dycotomous key to determinate mediterranean shrubs and observe all adaptations that Rosemary (tipical mediterranean plant) exhibits.

The DNA

In this workshop, we will study all great figures in the history of DNA, we will talk about the form and function of DNA, how to use DNA in criminology, etc and as a practice, we will obtain DNA from a banana that we will take home in an eppendorf.

Medicinals plants; Aloe vera's workshop

In this workshop we will talk about medicinals plants, their properties, uses and cares. We will explain the description of ointment, infusion, decoction, poultice, etc. We will talk widely about the aloe, it caracteristhics and propeties. In the laboratory, we will make a aloe's cream to take home.

Aromatic plants

Where you can find the scent of plants? what's the point for the plant? how can you extract? how can we use?...these and more questions have the answer in our workshop. Also we will take a small bag with dry aromatic plants which we can use as clothes moth repellent.

Photosynthesis and climate change

Plants fight against climate change by making the photosynthesis. In our workshop we will do a real experiment: we will make an alga sferification where we put unicellulars algaes inside alginate's bubbles and then we will put them with an indicator that can change its colors depending of the amoung of oxygen that algaes produce in photosynthesis. Do you dare?

Plants cosmetic

In this workshop we will talk about cosmetics created from plants preparations. We´ll also explain what they are and how we can prepare infusions, decoctions, creams, soaps, champus...we will show the properties of medical plants and others naturals elements, as honey or beeswax, that we can combinate with plants. As practice, we must choose previously one of this activities: moisturizing cream, natural soap or natural champu.

Evolution: the conquest of the Earth

In this workshop we will walk an evolutive route, from most primitive plants that we have nowadays, moss and hepatics, to the present ones, angiosperms. We will build on plant reproduction system. Inside the laboratory, we will see differents plants elements, such as moss, pteridophites soros, male and female cones of cycas, male flowers of gymnosperms and flower of angiosperms.

Wood and paper

Did you know that we will manufacture a fleece with 40 recycled plastic bottles? Did you know that we can keep our TV on for an hour with the energy that we obtain recycling a plastic container? We will talk about recycle in general and paper's in particular. Each student will make a recylced paper which will take home or school.

Biodiversity: dispersion of seeds

All plants have mechanisms to disperse seeds, because when a seed germinates the plant can't move to another place. Thus seeds and fruits can travel and use differents ways to do it as wind, animals and water. In this workshop you can find the diversity of fruits and seeds and mechanisms to disperse, it will surprise you!!

.

Compost

Compost is the way that the nature recycle parts of plats. Organic matter is transformed to compost by the action of millions of microorganisms and invertebrates. In this workshop we will study the compost, how it works, the most important phases, what it means to us.... we will visit the compost zone here in the garden and as a practice we will measure the porosity, the pH and the water's retention. We will talk about the most important groups of invertebates ans their clasification, watching them.

.

Gardening activity

This workshop is indicated to adults that want to know how  take care of plants and reproduce them. As a practice we will make a stem cutting in a plant pot that we will take home.
